The Hemophilia Center of Western Pennsylvania clotting factor program was established in 2000 as a complement to the Center’s other comprehensive care services. The clotting factor program allows the Center the opportunity to offer clotting factor to its patients, thereby supplementing its comprehensive treatment care model and providing the best possible care for its patients. The Center operates the factor program through its contract pharmacy, CanyonCARE.
As a participant in the federal government’s 340B Drug Pricing Program established by The Veteran’s Health Care Act of 1992, the Hemophilia Center of Western Pennsylvania purchases its clotting factor at a discounted Public Health Service rate. Participating in the 340B program requires the Center to use its 340B program income to support patient care and related services necessary to provide comprehensive treatment. In accordance with this requirement, the Center has been able to expand its clinical services and has supported and partnered with many third party organizations that benefit the hemophilia community. Since HCWP’s participation in the 340B program, the Center has been able to expand its patient services to include: physical therapy, genetic counseling, additional clinical and research nursing staff and pediatricians. In addition, the Center is able to offer three annual patient outreach clinics. The Center also supports other community hemophilia partners such as The Western Pennsylvania Chapter of the National Hemophilia Foundation, Patient Services Inc., Foundation for Women & Girls with Blood Disorders, American Thrombosis and Hemostasis Network (ATHN) and the World Federation of Hemophilia.
