Nursing

We recommend that our patients schedule a yearly comprehensive evaluation, during which they are seen by the multidisciplinary team. Our goal is to assist in your healthcare management and to help you and your family maintain a normal lifestyle. During this visit, patients will be seen by a pediatric or adult physician, nurse, physical therapist, social worker and genetic counselor. The visit may take up to three hours to complete. National statistics show the increased benefit to patients who receive care from a multidisciplinary team.

The medical evaluation includes a medical history, a physical exam, a review of current medications, review of upcoming elective surgical procedures, laboratory studies and assessment of bleeding episodes/thrombotic events and associated complications. Home treatment records are also reviewed at this time.

The center’s nursing staff also provides in-depth education on bleeding disorders, home infusion training, coordination of care between medical professionals, and information on how to treat bleeds early and at sufficient dose and dose frequency to avoid complications and improve outcomes.

In order to be able to provide our patients with the best care, the Hemophilia Center Team requires:

  • Notification of elective surgical procedure at least 2 weeks prior to a scheduled date
  • Information at first sign of a bleed so that it can be properly treated
  • Updated medication list
  • Home treatment records with each factor order
